Lode Runner For iPod Launches Today
Company: Hudson
Date: 16 Dec 2008
REDWOOD CITY, CA - December 16, 2008 - HUDSON SOFT COMPANY, LIMITED today announced the simultaneous global release of the action puzzle game, "Lode Runner," custom-made for iPod, in 22 countries. The game will be sold on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com) for $4.99 and can be played on the iPod nano (3rd and 4th generation), iPod classic, and iPod (5th generation). One of the unique features is the casual style of play through use of the Click Wheel while listening to music on the iPod. HUDSON SOFT COMPANY, LIMITED released "Bomberman," custom-made for the iPod, in December last year, and is planning on releasing many more casual games for the iPod in the future.

The classic action puzzle series, "Lode Runner," for iPod makes full use of the iPod's unique control system. In this single player game, you have to collect all the gold and climb the escape ladder as you avoid or defeat the robots that are out to get you in each stage. There are 5 game modes available: Standard, Expert, Master, Puzzle, and Gold Rush. Standard, Expert, and Master modes follow the same classic rules, but vary in difficulty while Master mode is the biggest challenge.

Puzzle mode is quite different than the normal modes; instead of avoiding or defeating robots, the challenge is to dig holes in the right order to collect all of the gold. Gold Rush mode is exclusive to the iPod. The player must navigate the stage, which automatically scrolls downwards, as they collect the gold to achieve the highest score. This mode introduces a completely new style of gameplay to "Lode Runner". There are several types of gold available with bonus points being awarded for collecting the same type in a row, making the game highly strategic. Being trapped at the top of the screen as it scrolls down means game over.

Retro classic Lode Runner comes to the iPod
That's right. The iPod. You remember those, right?

 Product: Lode Runner
 Developer: Hudson Soft
 Publisher: Hudson Soft
 Genre: Platform, Retro

by Spanner Spencer

Did you know that before the iPhone came along, there was a smaller version used mainly for playing music, called the iPod? I know! I was just as surprised as you - especially when I discovered Hudson Entertainment just released the awesome retro classic Lode Runner for it.

I jest, of course (about the long lost iPod - not Lode Runner). Of course we still own and love our iPods, and it's great to see it still getting a bit of gaming attention. For those who missed Lode Runner the first time around (it was 1983, after all) it's a platform game that featured one of the first ever level editors.

This latest iPod adaptation features some flashier graphics, of course, and uses the click wheel as a pretty intuitive controller. In many respects the game plays like Pac-Man with gravity - requiring you to traverse the platforms and ladders, collecting up gold while avoiding the robots trying to capture you.

This version also features a couple of new modes to keep things interesting. Puzzle mode involves digging holes in the right order to find all the gold, while Gold Rush (exclusive to the iPod) sets the normally static levels off scrolling - requiring you to collect up the gold without getting left behind.

Available now from iTunes, Lode Runner weighs in at ?3.99, and seems to be doing pretty well judging by the user reviews. Here's a link to get you to its iTunes page a bit quicker.

(Screenshots are from the mobile version - none avaiable yet for the iPod).
